Making Tourism Sustainable

We believe that tourism is unviable without it benefiting the very reasons that make it happen: people, culture and the environment. Being beneficial is one thing, making it sustainable is something else. As an inherent part of ‘God’s Own Country’, responsibility to the environment, the community and its culture is not just a corporate catchphrase at Muthoot Hotels, it’s our sustenance.

In all our initiatives, it is our constant attempt to promote conservation oriented sustainable tourism. So that the only impact we have on the environment and people are positive. By staying at a Muthoot Hotels resort, you’re not only experiencing the best in hospitality, but helping the local ecology and economy too.

The Muthoot Environment Research Foundation (MERF) was set up in 2005 as an endeavour to promote environmental awareness and respect for our surroundings. It started off as a role model with an Eco Cell plant at Muthoot Backwater Cruises, Alleppey. Today MERF has grown into an organization that supports and encourages various conservation projects at a local level.

Across all projects of Muthoot Leisure & Hospitality Services, MERF plays an earnest role in safeguarding and contributing to the environment, as well as supporting the local community and culture in many ways possible.

‘Vasantha Sena’

MERF marshals the help of tribal women, formed into a force called the ‘VASANTHA SENA’ or ‘Spring Brigade’ to report any illegal activity in the forest, thus conserving the biosphere without external intervention.

The Flying Squirrel Project

The Muthoot Environment Research Foundation goes one further by supporting the study of 2 endangered species of Flying Squirrels in the Periyar forests. Through research and studied steps towards preservation and conservation, it hopes to improve the status of these little mammals, and in time, their entire eco-system.

Some of MERF’s initiatives at properties of Muthoot Hotels:
Sustainable Community Inclusion
Many regions of Kerala are home to ethnic tribes and communities who have remained on the fringes of society. More than 60% of our staff is made up of people from within the immediate locality itself. Muthoot Cardamom County supports ethnic art and culture in the Periyar region through their inclusion into the resort programmes and activities for guests. Additionally, sustainable economic initiatives, like the sourcing of produces from small local farmers, are also actively encouraged.
Active Organic Farming

Muthoot Cardamom County cultivates its own spices, vegetables, flowers, honey and fruits for use at the resort, in our own organic farm spread over an acre. The farm relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control, to maintain soil productivity and control pests. The farm also houses a butterfly garden that is home to many varieties of local butterflies and insect species. Besides the organic farm, there is also a chicken & turkey farm and a natural water pond and fish farm.

The organic farm was started as means of ensuring fresh and healthy produce for our guests, as also a way of checking the rampant use of farm pesticides and hormones as a result of the competitive market conditions. The organic farming initiative at Muthoot Cardamom County is a small but sure start towards being self sufficient.

Energy and Resource Conservation

We’ve made good on the importance of maintaining, harvesting and conserving natural resources wherever possible at our resorts.

• Natural water harvesting: No water is sourced from outside the premises of our resort. The resort has its own comprehensive rain water harvesting system in addition to a natural water harvesting pond. Additionally two more wells have been added to the property through an activity initiated by the resort staff itself.
• Solar water heating system: Our solar water heating system caters to need of a majority of our room requirements. This helps us save almost 1.5 liters of diesel every day.
• Gravity water flow: Water to the flush tanks are connected with gravity water flow which helps avoid the use of an electric motor pump. This helps to save almost 3 units of power per day, amounting to 1095 units in a year.
• Cloth drying on the open terrace

Green Initiatives
• Reuse & recycling: Great emphasis is placed on reducing, recycling and reusing resources where possible. Be it water or paper. At Muthoot Cardamom County, we reuse paper in offices and treat 8000 liters of water at the in house Effluence Treatment Plant. Almost 3000 liters of back-washed water has been used to irrigate our organic farms. We’ve also initiated a unique guest reward programme to encourage the reuse of linen in rooms. Guests can avail a 10% discount for reusing their linen.
• Plastic Free Resort: As part of the attempt to keep our resorts plastic free, we adopt and encourage alternative materials wherever possible, like laundry bags, garbage bags etc.
• Jute chappals are provided instead of cloth chappals and bio products are used as toiletries in rooms.
• Only energy efficient bulbs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) are used at our properties.
• Eco cell plant: The eco-cell plant for our houseboats is the only one on the backwaters. The plant helps ensure that not a drop of unclean water is pumped into the backwaters.
